General Information

Macdonald School’s HCSA is an optional program for students interested in applying.  20 spots are open for occupancy.

It is available to ALL students in Grades 3-9.  

PLEASE NOTE:  No Previous Hockey Experience is Necessary

Enrolment will cap from a class to class basis.  (Ex. If there is only room for 2 more students and there are 5 students from Grade 4 who want to register - there will not be any students from Grade 4 permitted).

Student’s will engage in hockey skills training during school hours.  The program will commence on December 7, 2021 and will run until the end of March, 2022. 

Creative timetabling will allow this program to proceed during a specific time frame in the yearly timetable.  The HCSA will run on days 2 and 5 in the GSSD calendar.  The program will run from 12:30 – 1:30, students will receive their HCSA programming on ice at the Reg Banga Memorial Communiplex (5 minute walk from Macdonald School). 

Quality instruction from a High Performance Coach and Hockey Canada Skills Coach – Casey O’Brien - Edge2Edge Hockey will be provided on-ice twice a week. 

Reg Leidl will be a guest speaker and will provide some goalie skills training.

Melissa Johanson and Heather Bergstrom will participate/supervise/assist students on and off ice.  Managing of the program and curricular outcomes.

Student Expectations

FEE: 

  • $250.00 fee per student.
  • Cheques made payable to: Macdonald School
  • (Payment schedules can be arranged. Applications for sponsorships are also available to help with fees)

EQUIPMENT: 

  • Full Equipment is Mandatory
  • (The MAC HCSA is dedicated in supporting players in need of equipment)

CURRICULAR OUTCOMES:  

  • Students who participate in the HCSA will be missing non-core curricular areas.  It is expected that students will complete assignments after school hours or during lunch hour tutorials.  

ATTENDANCE:  

  • Full Attendance is Mandatory
  • All students must be dressed and on-ice by 12:30 of each session.  

OFF-ICE TRAINING/GUEST SPEAKERS:

  • It is mandatory that all HCSA players attend the off-ice sessions and guest speaker presentations. These times will occur during lunch periods on Tuesdays. Notice will be given to participants the week prior.  

Program Goals

  • Increase student intellectual engagement by providing an opportunity for development in students area of passion.  
  • To provide elite skill development opportunities for students to reach maximum potential in the skills of hockey.  
  • Students will build a strong sense of belonging with each other and the community of Stockholm.
  • At every opportunity, a focus on developing positive mental health and wellbeing through mindfulness practices in hockey will be explored and practiced. 

Communication Plan for Students

  • Students will be provided dates and schedule of HCSA.
  • Students will be provided with HCSA expectations.
  • Students will understand commitments towards missed curricular assignments.
  • Students will be informed of and adhere to safety plan for walking to and from the rink safely.  
  • Students will be informed and adhere to the on-ice safety plan.
  • Check-ins with teachers and principal regarding completion of assignments.

Communication Plan for Parents

  • Parents will be provided dates and schedule of HCSA.
  • Parents will be provided with HCSA expectations.
  • Parents will understand commitments towards online Health/Art assignments.
  • Parents will be informed of the safety plan for walking to and from the rink safely.  
  • Check-ins with parents regarding completion of assignments.
  • Parents will be informed of skill development.  
  • Videos/photos will be shared for parents who consent.
